Hewlett-Packard Company - Your Long-Term Partner
HP was identified as a Fortune 26 company by Fortune magazine in April
of 1992. HP is financially strong with $16 billion dollars in revenue
in fiscal year 1992. In our 53 year history, we have never had a
losing quarter. IBM declared a loss of $4.97 billion dollars for 1992.
They also declared an $11 billion dollar restructuring charge. IBM
lost $2.8 billion dollars in 1991. On Friday, January 15, 1993 the Wall
Street Journal reported DEC's second quarter results took Wall Street
investors by surprise with a LOWER-THAN-EXPECTED loss on a 6% revenue
gain. DEC's net loss was $73.9 million compared to $155.2 million the
year before. Revenue rose to $3.69 billion from $3.48 billion. The
news resulted in DEC's stock shooting up 21% as investors speculate
that new management, Alpha technology, and aggressive cost cutting may
"seed" a turnaround for DEC. DEC now employs 102,500 people.
Other facts reported were that DEC's VAX computer line sales have
stabilized and workstation sales have grown strongly. Alpha sales were
reported by DEC as getting off to a strong start, especially in low-end
systems. However, most of the sales are going to software developers
and large customers only interested in evaluating the design. High-end
Alpha systems are not selling well because key application software
packages aren't ready yet.
In December, 1992, InfoCorp. a leading industry consulting firm
positioned HP as the number 2 midrange computer vendor. IBM is number
one and DEC dropped to number 3. HP is known as a leader in several
areas. The most well known area is customer satisfaction. In November
1992, Computerworld's "Buyers' Scorecard" rated the HP 3000 as having
the most satisfied users of all customers surveyed. The HP 3000 scored
84 points out of a total of 100 points. (IBM's AS/400 scored 83 and the
DEC VAX scored 79.) In a May, 1993 Computerworld Buyers' Scorecard on
openness the HP 3000 was rated slightly less open than the DEC VAX and
much more open than IBM's AS/400.

HP 3000 Customer Support
Customer satisfaction has always been a key focus of the HP 3000
program and unequaled customer service and support have been a
prominent contributor to HP 3000 customer satisfaction. HP provides
worldwide support coverage 24 hours a day so that customer problems can
get quick resolution no matter when or where they occur. HP also
provides a broad range of services and provides support services for
non-HP equipment as well as HP equipment so that HP can serve as a one-
stop vendor for support services. In addition, HP offers consulting
and training services. The HP 3000 has frequently been ranked number1
in service and support in annual Datapro customer surveys with 9
consecutive number one rankings in service and support.
SLIDE: HP3K-030
HP Financing
HP provides a wide range of financing options that allows customers to
finance in a manner most comfortable for them. HP financing is a
leader when it comes to combining competitive rates with flexibility.
In financing HP seeks to be a partner to the customer and not function
just as a leasing company. With HP financing a company is not
penalized if it finds that it needs to upgrade or change systems before
a lease agreement expires. HP also provides a great deal of
flexibility to accomodate the cash flow of the customer.

HP 3000 Business Strategy
The HP 3000 business strategy can be summarized as a two-point
strategy. The first element is a focus on repeat business by
concentrating on customer satisfaction. The second element is a
strategy to gain new business with best-in-class application suppliers
to provide business solutions with unequaled value for HP 3000
customers.

HP 3000: The High-Water Mark in Multi-User, OLTP Computing
The HP 3000 is a high-performance system for multi-user OLTP (on-line
transaction processing) providing a unique combination of ease of
operations, high degree of integration, and superior data availability.
The HP 3000 typically requires much lower staffing and fewer operator
shifts compared to competing systems with many aspects of system
operation such as job scheduling and backup able to operate unattended.
The HP 3000 also offers a high degree of integration with sophisticated
spooling and print management, job scheduling, and databases (both
network and relational) tightly integrated with the operating system.
In addition to highly reliable hardware and operating system software,
the HP 3000 also features the unique ability to recover automatically
after system outages without operator intervention. Many customer
surveys rate the HP 3000 as number1 in customer satisfaction.

HP 3000 Product Overview
The HP 3000 is designed to provide you with 'Worry-Free, Business-
Critical Computing.' HP is committed to maximizing the success of your
business by providing total, integrated solutions for your business-
critical applications.
One of the key elements of the HP 3000 strategy is the focus on best-
in-class applications. It has never been the objective of the HP 3000
to have the greatest number of applications. Instead, the HP 3000 has
found great success by focusing on having the best manufacturing,
accounting, logistics, and human resource applications in the industry.
Offering a broad range of completely compatible cost-effective systems
has always been one of the foundations of the HP 3000 strategy. The
PA-RISC architecture of the HP 3000 systems allows the HP 3000 family
to provide unsurpassed price/performance and growth path. Today the HP
3000 product family provides systems from the desk side to the data
center, all with complete software compatibility. (In addition, the
current generation of high performance RISC-based HP 3000 systems
provides complete compatibility with previous generation CISC-based HP
3000 systems.)
It has been a hallmark of HP 3000 systems that they require less
management than comparably performing systems from other vendors. A
design goal of the very first HP 3000 systems was to eliminate the need
for a systems programmer which was a requirement for competing systems.
HP 3000 systems include many self-tuning features in the operating
system such as the dynamic allocation of all of memory between system
code, applications, and the caching of files and databases. Also
included with HP 3000 systems is the automatic recovery of data
integrity after a system failure caused by an event such as an extended
power outage. And finally, the HP 3000 operating system, MPE/iX,
includes features that prevent operator error from damaging the system
such as accidentally purging the operating system.
HP 3000 systems are well recognized for their reliability and are
frequently used for mission-critical applications where the cost of
downtime can be measured in thousands of dollars when the system is
down. In addition to highly reliable hardware and systems software, HP
3000 databases provide transparent data integrity with fast and
automatic recovery after software or hardware failures.
A recent focus of the HP 3000 program has been increased flexibility
and open systems capabilities for HP 3000 customers. This focus on
flexibility and openness has included the support of the most popular
3rd party databases and 4GL client/server toolsets on the HP 3000. In
addition, the HP 3000 has perhaps the most complete set of networking
products in the industry providing the capability to connect to
virtually any other system on the market today. The recent addition of
support for the POSIX standards on the HP 3000 adds greatly to the
portability of software to the HP 3000.

HP 3000 Family
Key Messages: The HP 3000 provides the broadest range of 100%
compatible systems available in the market today. The HP 3000 family
has systems ranging in size from those supporting a few users to those
which can comfortably support thousands of concurrent users and are
alternatives to all but the largest mainframes.
Key Messages: These systems are 100% object code compatible and built
on HP's Precision Architecture RISC (PA-RISC) architecture. Unlike
systems from other vendors, the HP 3000 provides field upgrades within
each family configuration. These upgrades typically only involve a
processor board swap to the higher processor. The Series 9X7 family of
systems supports user ranges from a few users to over 1700 users. The
performance range for this compact, high-powered family of systems is
in excess of 200 transactions per second. A two-way multiprocessing
9X7 system is expected in the 1st half of 1994.
The CS 99X Corporate Business Systems are the current high end of the
HP 3000 family. These systems support in excess of 2000 users and up
to 2 terabytes of disk space. The Corporate Business Systems are
comparable in performance and functionality to the water-cooled IBM
ES/9000 Model 740 and IBM 3090-600J mainframe systems. The air-cooled
HP Corporate Business Systems typically cost 1/10 the purchase price of
comparable IBM mainframes, with substantial on-going cost-of-ownership
savings as well. On-going costs are reduced because the HP 3000
operational staff requirements, environmental requirements, power
requirements, and maintenance costs are much lower. The HP 3000
Corporate Business System currently supports up to 4-way
multiprocessing and will support 8-way multiprocessing in the 1st half
of 1994. Eight-way multiprocessing will be supported via processor
boards with 2 CPUs, thus allowing the support of 8-way multiprocessing
with no impact on memory capacity or configurability.
It is possible to purchase an HP 3000 system by ordering the hardware
and the individual operating and system software products separately.
The optimum way to order, however, is through the integrated solution
offered by the Series 947RX Plus through 987SX Plus and the CS 992 DX
configurations which provide a substantial discount compared to
purchasing the systems and the system software products separately.
SLIDE: HP3K-150
HP 3000 Systems Performance Positioning (being updated by Madeline J.)
SLIDE: HP3K-160
HP 3000: Industry Leading Price/Performance
The HP 3000 provides price/performance among the leaders in the
industry. One proof of this are benchmark results using the industry-
standard TPC-C benchmark. TPC-C, a standardized benchmark for
measuring computer systems, defines measures for performance and
price/performance. Performance is measured in terms of TPM
(Transactions Per Minute). Price/performance is measured in terms of
dollars required to produce each measured TPM. The Series 957RX is a
midrange system in the HP 3000 9x7 product family. As can be seen, the
HP 3000 provide price/performance that is noticeably superior to the
price/performance of the AS/400 family from IBM and still superior to
IBM's UNIX-based RS/6000 systems.
SLIDE: HP3K-170
HP 3000 Low-End and Midrange Systems
HP 3000 low-end and midrange systems come in three basic
configurations; LX, RX, and SX. The LX package contains two I/O card
slots and supports up to 192 Mb of main memory and up to 40 Gb of disk
storage. The RX package, approximately 2 times the size of the LX
package, contains 4 I/O card slots and supports up to 768 Mb of memory
and up to 68 Gb of disk storage. The SX package, the same size as the
RX package, contains 12 I/O card slots, supports up to 768 Mb of
memory, and up to 98 Gb of disk storage.
SLIDE: HP3K-180
HP 3000 Corporate Business Systems
The HP 3000 Corporate Business Systems are designed for high-end
processing needs and are ideal for mainframe offloading or replacement.
The HP 3000 Corporate Business System family consists of 5 systems.
The HP 3000 Series 990 and 992/100 are uniprocessor systems while the
Series 992/200, 992/300, and 993/400 are 2-way, 3-way, and 4-way
multiprocessing systems, respectively. The HP 3000 Corporate Business
Systems support up to 2 terabytes of disk space and up to 2300 hundred
users. Future plans for the HP 3000 Corporate Business Systems include
support for up to 8-way multiprocessing via 2 CPUs per processor board
so that memory capacity and I/O configurability are not affected.
SLIDE: HP3K-200
HP 3000 Ease of Operations
The HP 3000 provides exceptional ease of operations and can be operated
with minimal staffing. Automatic job scheduling and unattended backup
capabilities allow HP 3000 systems to be operated with one shift.
Transparent and automatic data integrity recovery after software or
hardware failures also contributes to low staffing requirements on HP
3000 systems. In addition, MPE/iX, the operating system for the HP
3000, is designed to tune itself for best performance depending on the
load characteristics. For example, MPE/iX automatically and
dynamically allocates all of main memory between application code and
caching of file and databases and will change this allocation
automatically as the system load changes.
SLIDE: HP3K-210
HP 3000 Puts You in Control
The HP 3000 is designed with protection from inadverdent operator error
in mind. The HP 3000 predefines system operation and management roles
such as system operator, system manager, network manager, etc. which
have capabilities based on their tasks. On the HP 3000 it is virtually
impossible to accidentally erase the operating system. UNIX systems,
in contrast, define two types of users; Super User and Normal Users.
The UNIX Super User is all-powerful and, through the use of the
recursive feature of the UNIX command structure, can easily purge the
operating system accidentally.
SLIDE: HP3K-220
HP 3000 Integrated Transaction Manager
The HP 3000 provides an integrated transaction manager that provides
transparent and automatic integrity for major subsystems such as
IMAGE/SQL and KSAM databases and the system directory while at the same
boosting performance. During system operations, the integrated
transaction manager regularly and automatically posts changes to major
subsystems to disk log files. Generally, multiple updates are
contained in each transaction manager posting to disk, thus replacing
multiple disk I/O's with a single disk I/O and further removing disk
I/O as a possible source of performance bottlenecking. In addition,
since the transaction manager has posted changes to disk, it is able to
automatically and transparently perform data integrity recovery after a
software or hardware failure. This is a distinct advantage over the
cumbersome manual recovery required on IBM AS/400 and UNIX systems.
SLIDE: HP3K-230
Managing Distributed Systems
HP OpenView Manager features a full color, graphical-user interface
that provides the status of the systems and the network. Operators can
see at a glance whether the systems and network are operating normally
or if there is a situation that needs attention.
Key Messages: Businesses today are seeking to ensure the most effective
utilization of their resources. HP OpenView System Manager provides an
effective and intelligent solution for systems management by allowing
for a network of HP 3000 systems to be managed from a central location.
HP OpenView System Manager allows for the management of both HP 3000
systems and the network from a central location.
HP OpenView System Manager increases operator efficiency with
management by exception. This feature allows you to build the
necessary intelligence into OpenView so your operators are made aware
of only the most important situations.
OpenView System Manager also supports multiple consoles with task-based
filters that allow messages to be directed to the appropriate console.
An example of this is the direction of printer messages to the printer
console. This makes it possible for operations staff to focus on those
tasks that are the most important. HP OpenView also notifies
operations of impending problems so they can be fixed before an actual
failure occurs.
HP OpenView System Manager increases system availability by focusing
system management expertise in a central location where that expertise
is available to all of the systems in the network. HP OpenView
capabilities play a major role in reducing operations cost and
improving the total cost of ownership for your information systems
organization.
System flexibility is important to today's businesses, because it
enables you to quickly react to changing market dynamics.
OperationCenter is very similar to OV System Manager but can manage a
heterogeneous environment, whereas OV System Manager is limited to
managing HP 3000 systems.
Notes:
Positioning relative to OperationCenter:
HP OpenView System Manager is a popular system management tool for HP
3000 customers. It is used in homogenous HP 3000 environments today.
HP 3000 customers should buy OpenView System Manager when
1. They are managing MPE/iX or MPE/V systems 2. They prefer a PC
running Windows to a UNIX workstation as the central console
HP 3000 customers should buy OperationCenter when
1. They are managing a heterogenous environment with UNIX and MPE 2.
They expect to manage a heterogenous environment in the near future
Customers who are on HP OpenView System Manager today will have several
questions about its positioning. Here is some Q & A to help you
address those:
Q: Will OperationCenter go to NT? Will OpenView System Manager?
A: Both OperationCenter and OV System Mgr. have the ability to
go to NT in the future as market demand warrants. OV System Mgr. is
expected to move to NT sooner than OperationCenter (moving from a DOS
platform is simpler).
Q: What is the strategic importance of OV System Mgr? A:
The HP 3000 has always added value to its customers by being easy to
manage. OV System Mgr. is an excellent solution for managing HP 3000
systems, and is even bundled in with several 9x7 and Corporate
Business System models. It remains an excellent choice for reducing
operation costs in HP 3000-only environments. Investigations are
under way to determine the feasibility of enhancing OV System Mgr.
to manage more than just HP 3000 systems.

HP 3000 Integration
The HP 3000 provides an integrated solution providing system
management, spooling and print management, job management and
scheduling capabilities, and databases as part of the system. This
integration eliminates the need to maintain in-house expertise to
manage and integrate software from multiple vendors.

HP 3000: An Integrated Solution
The HP 3000, in comparison to UNIX, provides an integrated solution
with many standard features that must be purchased separately with a
UNIX system or a PC Lan. The HP 3000 includes an integrated
transaction manager that provides transparent data integrity and
automatic recovery. Every HP 3000 includes as a standard feature
battery backup for main memory that allows the HP 3000 to recovery
transparently after short-term power outages. Equivalent functionality
for a UNIX system may mean the purchase of a UPS (Uninterruptible Power
Supply). The HP 3000 also features two powerful databases as cost-
effective options; IMAGE/SQL, widely recognized as one of the best OLTP
databases in the industry, and ALLBASE/SQL, a full-featured, high-
performance relational database.

HP 3000: An Integrated Solution
The HP 3000 includes as standard a sophisticated spooler and job
management capabilities while a UNIX system requires that these
components be purchased at additional cost.

Cost of System Downtime
The cost of downtime for mission-critical applications can be very
high. Shown on this slide are the costs of system downtime for
companies in manufacturing, auto rental, and distribution. As you can
see, system downtime can be quite costly and have serious business
impacts. (Note: Business impact factors leading to high cost are
listed at the bottom of the slide. These are actual numbers compiled
by internal studies at three companies that have both HP 3000s and IBM
mainframes.)
SLIDE: HP3K-280
HP 3000 High-Availability Objectives
Key Messages: The HP 3000 provides the robustness of a mainframe
environment without the associated costs. The HP 3000 provides for
continuous system and application availability. It offers intelligent
system management which provides efficient and effective system
operations, and a highly functional and integrated relational data base
management system.
A key part of the HP 3000 data center ready environment is high
availability. The larger the company the greater the loss will be when
the system is unavailable. You can not afford for your computer
systems to be unavailable.
Key Messages: HP's high-availability "hierarchy of needs" identifies
the areas that need to be addressed by the system, including both
planned and unplanned downtime.
HP 3000 Solutions to Unplanned Downtime: SPU Switchover
The SPU Switchover product provides the ability to switch users and
their data and applications to an alternate SPU, typically within 30
minutes and without causing a reboot of the alternate SPU. SPU
Switchover requires, typically, less than 30 minutes to transfer disks
and users to the backup SPU. The complexity of the system
configuration has an effect on the time required to switch over to
another SPU. If you have two systems in a very simple environment it
may only take 15 minutes. If you have several systems on the network
which may include connections via X.25, it may take 30 to 45 minutes to
make the switch to the backup SPU. (Note: Refer to the SPU Switchover
data sheet (part number is 5952-1037E) for more details.)
Note: It is important to note that only the users on the primary HP
3000 system have to logoff and then log on to the backup system. Some
configurations require users on backup system to log off for system
reboot and then log back on to the backup system.
Solutions for Planned Downtime: OpenView DTC Manager
OpenView DTC Manager helps to eliminate planned downtime by allowing
online terminal and local printer configuration.
Solutions for Planned Downtime: TurboSTORE
TurboSTORE, ordered with the online backup capability, supports around-
the-clock transaction processing without sacrificing data backups or
requiring redundant mirrored disks. The only impact on application
processing is a short application downtime period of 5 minutes for
IMAGE/SQL applications or less as the backup begins to ensure complete
logical data integrity. (Note: ALLBASE/SQL applications require no
downtime for online data back up.) After the backup is started,
applications can continue processing throughout the duration and
completion of the backup. Refer to the TurboSTORE data sheet (part
number 5091-1071E) for more details.
Solutions for Unplanned and Planned Downtime: Mirrored Disk, Disk
Arrays
Mirrored Disk eliminates application downtime as a result of disk
failure and additionally provides an on-line data backup capability.
TurboSTORE, when used with Mirrored Disk, gives full protection against
disk failure during on-line data backup. Refer to the Mirrored Disk
data sheet (same part number as SPU Switchover 5952- 1037E) for more
details. Disk Arrays help eliminate unplanned downtime due to disk
failure with RAID technology. With RAID technology data is stored in
the disk array in such a manner that the array is able to continue
operating with no loss of access to data in the event that one of the
disk drives in the array fails.
Solutions for Unplanned Downtime: SharePlex/iX
SharePlex/iX is the industry's first high availability product that
provides disaster-tolerance without geographic limitations. With
SharePlex/iX it is possible to have automatic data replication across a
network of systems such that if one system in the network is disabled
by a regional disaster, the data continues to be available on the other
systems for the continuation of business. The two key components of
SharePlex/iX are OpenView System Manager from HP and NetBase from Quest
Software.
Competitive Information
There are no SPU Switchover capabilities available for the AS/400. The
AS/400 has a comparable product to Mirrored Disk and the system can
perform online backups.
There are no capabilities like SharePlex/iX coupled systems for
disaster tolerance available for the AS/400 or the RS/6000. SharePlex
is only available for the HP 3000 and provides for wide-area,
distributed data capabilities.
For UNIX systems, capabilities like SPU Switchover and Mirrored Disk
may be available but the backup system has to be shut down and re-
booted to have it recognize the primary systems disks. This means that
users on both the primary and backup systems have to log off and log
back on again. HP 3000 users on the backup system do not have to log
off to recognize the disks from the primary system.

HP 3000 Open System Attributes
When compared to the Open Systems benefits desired by the vast majority
of Open Systems survey respondents, the HP 3000 is one of the most open
systems on the market today. When asked which open systems benefits
are most important to them, 70% of Open Systems survey respondents
indicate that interoperability is the most desired benefit of open
systems. Only 20% of the respondents indicated that software
portability was the most important benefit of open systems and 10%
chose something other than interoperability and software portability.
The HP 3000 has one of the most robust and complete offerings of
networking products in the industry and is able to interoperate with
virtually every other system in the market. In addition, via the
support of official and de facto standards, the HP 3000 is able to
offer industry-leading software portability.
Slide: HP3K-300
HP 3000 Open Software Environment
The HP 3000 provides robust support for standards in all of the
functional areas needed to provide Open Systems interoperability and
portability. With regards to languages and tools the HP 3000 supports
the major ANSI-standard languages as well as many of the dominant de-
facto standard multivendor 4GL and client/server application
development toolsets. With regards to databases the HP 3000 provides
ALLBASE/SQL, an SQL-compliant relational database as well as leading
multivendor 3rd party databases such as Oracle and Ingres. With
regards to networking links and services the HP 3000 provides a broad
ranges of products and standards that allow the HP 3000 to provide
interoperability second to none in the industry. In the area of user
interface the HP 3000 supports both windowed PCs and UNIX workstations
using the X-Windows/OSF Motif interface. In addition to the support of
standards in these different areas, the HP 3000 will also provide
support for POSIX, the industry-standard operating system interface
standards.
Slide: HP3K-310
The HP 3000 Winning Combination; Standard Interfaces Plus OLTP
Performance
POSIX on the HP 3000 can be viewed as an extension to the existing MPE
interfaces. On the HP 3000, the POSIX interfaces sit alongside the
existing MPE interfaces rather than on top (implementing POSIX on top
of the existing MPE interfaces would have meant performance
degradation). With this integrated implementation it is possible to
have a single application make calls to both the MPE and the POSIX
interfaces. However, it is far more likely that existing MPE
applications will use the MPE interfaces and that new open systems
applications will use the POSIX interfaces.
While POSIX on the HP 3000 provides industry-standard operating system
interfaces, it should be stressed that the objective is not to turn the
HP 3000 into a UNIX system. The underlying MPE operating system with
its robust file system, flexible task scheduling capabilities,
integrated transaction manager, and disk I/O reduction technologies
remains the same. In fact, with POSIX and other Open Systems
capabilities on the HP 3000, it becomes possible for Open Systems users
to enjoy the same reliability and performance enjoyed by HP 3000 users
today.

MPE/iX Release Strategy
In December of 1992 MPE/iX 4.5, the first version of MPE/iX containing
the POSIX interfaces, was released. This release is recommended for
sites having an immediate need to run POSIX or applications develop
POSIX applications. The next major release will contain additional
POSIX functionality and will be recommended for general installation
for all HP 3000 sites.

NetWare for the HP 3000 Series 900
Netware from Novell of Provo, Utah is the most frequently chosen PC
networking software with nearly 80% of the PC LAN market. Novell
provides networking software for both clients and servers. Novell
Server software was first developed to run on the MS-DOS PC and so,
initially, PC LAN servers were generally high-end MS-DOS PCs. But as
time went on, businesses found that there were potential drawbacks to
PCs as network servers. The upgradability, reliability, and systems
management capabilities were not what they were accustomed to or needed
for large networks of PCs.
At the same time, very low-end midrange business computing systems such
as the HP 3000 began to take on some the characteristics of the PC,
that is, small size, PC-type power requirements (120 VAC), embedded
disk and tape drives, and, of course, low price. While the low-end HP
3000 systems began to resemble high-end PCs in some ways, they have
maintained distinct differences as well. The HP 3000 is a mainstay in
commercial computing with over 60,000 systems installed worldwide and
many awards for excellence in price/performance, reliability,
functionality, and service and support. The HP 3000 features a robust
commercial operating system (MPE/iX) that supports thousands of users,
provides full and robust system management capabilities, connects to
virtually any other system on the market, handles complex diverse
workloads consisting of both batch and online transaction processing
applications, and provides a performance growth path far beyond any
current or future PC hardware architecture. In addition, the HP 3000
supports a full suite of mission-critical business applications.
A highly-tuned version of Netware for the HP 3000 was released in
September of 1992. MPE/iX 4.0 performance benchmarks of this software
on the HP 3000 using an industry-standard benchmark have been
outstanding with a Series 917LX low-end HP 3000 system handily
outperforming a 486 PC for large user configurations. 486 performance
continues to be better for small user configurations. Users of Netware
for the HP 3000 such as Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho have
been extremely happy with the performance of the HP 3000 as a server
for their PC LANs and have found that even the smallest HP 3000 systems
outperform their fastest PC LAN Servers.
PC LANs that use the HP 3000 as a PC LAN server realize other benefits
in addition to outstanding performance. Plan B, from Quest Software,
allows an HP 3000 acting as a PC LAN server to automatically back up
the hard disks of all of the PCs on the network, thus eliminating one
of the major concerns of businesses that use PC LANs . . . loss of
critical business data. When used in conjunction with another product
from from Quest Software, NBSpool, the Novell server software allows HP
3000 applications to print to any printer on the Novell Network.
HP now offers a 60-day free trial copy of Netware for the HP 3000.
This software includes server and client software for supporting up to
250 PCs. Also included is a trial copy of the NBSpool product from
Quest Software. To order the free trial copy ask your sales rep to
order p/n J2253A or dial 1-800-637-7740 to order directly from HP
(MPE/iX 4.0 is required).

IMAGE/SQL . . . Reap relational client/server benefits from your
IMAGE investments
In August of 1992 HP announced one of the most dramatic enhancements in
the history of IMAGE/SQL . . . the addition of an SQL interface that
would provide read access to IMAGE/SQL databases* immediately with the
addition of write capabilities in mid-1993. With this announcement,
IMAGE/SQL is renamed to IMAGE/SQL to signify the addition of an SQL
interface for IMAGE/SQL. HP 3000 customers now have an enhanced
ability to use SQL-based tools with IMAGE/SQL. HP will be supporting
the leading SQL-based client/server 4GL application toolsets such as
Powerbuilder from Powersoft and SQLWindows from Gupta. Also supported
will be leading PC-based decision-support and reporting tools such as
Forest & Trees from Trinzic, Impromtu from Cognos, and Quest from
Gupta.
With IMAGE/SQL HP 3000 IMAGE/SQL users get the benefits of a relational
interface and support of a whole list of new client/server tools that
will allow them to develop new client/server decision support
applications, client/server executive information applications, and new
client/server applications. While access to these new leading-edge
application technologies is provided, 100% compatibility for existing
IMAGE/SQL applications is also provided, thus providing complete
investment protection for existing applications.

ALLBASE/SQL...Open, functionally rich, yet low-cost relational database
alternative.
ALLBASE/SQL is HP's industry standard, relational database management
system (RDBMS) designed to fit the needs of our high-end customers who
are interested in a low-cost alternative to traditional mainframe
DBMSs. Functionally rich, ALLBASE/SQL performs faster on both HP 3000s
and HP 9000s than any other relational database system as a result of
superior integration with HP's operating system and PA-RISC
architecture.
ALLBASE/SQL is the only RDBMS that allows current IMAGE/SQL customers
to protect their investment by providing full read/write access between
IMAGE/SQL and ALLBASE/SQL. This capability is particulariy attractive
to customers who are considering a mixed HP 3000 and HP 9000
environment.
Offering a robust SQL implementation, ALLBASE/SQL is popular with
customers whose application requires:
- High performance/OLTP - Large database (>50 GB) - Large number
of users (>250 users) - Shadowing technology
Our shadowing implementation is being used by customers who are
concerned with:
- Disaster recovery (important after World Trade Center bombing)
- Ability to off-load data to a secondary system for decision support,
so primary system can be focused on OLTP.
- High availability with 24-hour operatorless, remote back-ups.
ALLBASE/SQL offers installed base customers a gateway to popular new
technologies such as Encina, CICs or DCE. It is also the basis of HP's
industry-leading, object oriented database.
Like IMAGE/SQL, ALLBASE/SQL also supports the leading SQL-based
client/server 4GL application toolsets such as PowerBuilder from Power-
Soft, Uniface, SQL Windows from Gupta, etc. The leading Windows- based
decision-support and reporting tools such as Forest & Trees from
Trinzic, Impromptu from Cognos and Quest from Gupta are supported too.
By supporting leading-edge technologies and 4GL application toolsets,
HP customers can be confident of application portability once they
begin deployment of their applications. This capability supports HP's
overall Information Management Strategy: choice for our customers.
